Orange scores two fourth-quarter touchdowns to secure first ACC victory.

The Syracuse Orange football team hadn’t beaten a ranked opponent since 2012, and not many fans expected that to change against the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday at the Carrier Dome. But, in stunning fashion, the No. 17 Hokies (4-2, 2-1 ACC) fell to Syracuse (3-4, 1-2 ACC), 31-17.

Fans stormed the field following the victory, ecstatic their team pulled out an upset.

Led by the quarterback's four touchdowns, SU scored 40 unanswered points in a dominating team performance.

Only two weeks after Syracuse quarterback Terrel Hunt was ejected for punching an opponent in the team’s home opener, Central Michigan’s Joe Ostman made sure he didn’t forget about it.

With SU up 30 points in the fourth quarter, Ostman tackled Hunt after a whistle and tried to provoke him. But this time, Hunt had a more peaceful response.

The Orange contained the Minnesota offense and did not allow a 100-yard rusher for the 13th-straight game. But it was the touchdown from Hunt in the last minute of the game that sealed the win.

It was another defensive battle for Syracuse in Houston as the Orange pulled out a fourth quarter win over Minnesota on Friday, beating the Gophers 21-17 at the 2013 Texas Bowl to remain perfect in its two bowl games ever played in Texas.

“Well you know they say, ‘Don’t mess with Texas,’ well ‘Don’t mess with Syracuse in Texas,’ is what we say,” said Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer jokingly after the game.

Though neither team scored in the first half, the Orange capitalized on some Wake Forest turnovers to win 13-0.

It was a tale of two halves for Syracuse (4-4, 2-2 ACC), as the offense did nothing in the first half but put together two touchdown drives in the third quarter for the 13-0 victory over Wake Forest (4-5, 2-4 ACC).

“We had a lot of time to think during the bye week after getting our rumps kicked,” head coach Scott Shafer said. “I was really proud of out kids. They went to work after that tough loss. They’ve become tighter when we’ve had tough situations.”
