A student-run fashion show displayed garments based on various traditional cultures with a modern twist.

On Friday, the Rip the Runway fashion show transported students from central New York to a cultural oasis. 

As the first model sliced through the red fog and stomped onto the catwalk, the audience fell silent. Bright colors poured out onto the runway as rhythmic drums pumped through the Goldstein Auditorium.

Jessica Posner, a Syracuse University professor and "riot-grrl" singer, hosts a feminist rock showcase to counteract a local music scene dominated by men.

Indie music, cheap beers and interesting conversation makes for a usual Friday night at Spark Contemporary Art Space. This past Oct. 2, feminist punks clad in floral prints, combat boots and bandanas screamed, crooned, strummed and shredded raw emotion, angst and revolution in front of a rowdy crowd nodding and moshing along.

Entrepreneurs of this demographic in Syracuse feel overlooked by resources available to others.

In 2012, a Syracuse University freshman started a business seven months after arriving on campus from Atlanta. Courtnee Futch used six Babycakes© personal cupcake makers to bake small desserts for the 726 students in her dorm building. Futch, 21, started a baking business called ThunderCakes out of her dorm room and said she now receives an average of 150 orders per week from the Syracuse area.

Chefs take part in the My Lucky Tummy event, which allows five amateur chefs to share a favorite meal from their homeland with the community. This year's event took place Saturday and tickets sold out.

Ingredients of all shapes, sizes, colors and smells were blended into five sets of dishes at this fall’s My Lucky Tummy (MLT) event. MLT organizes two pop-up food courts a year, each featuring five amateur chefs sharing a favorite meal from their homelands with the public.

Thirteen Central New York businesswomen received awards for their leadership examples and services to the community at the Successful Business Women Awards. The event, produced by BizEventz, took place on Thursday, Sept. 24, at the Oncenter, 800 S. State St., in downtown Syracuse.

"Three Graces: Polly Apfelbaum, Tony Feher and Carrie Moyer" made their appearance at the Everson Museums Opening Night reception where the three artists discussed the meanings behind their work.

In Greco-Roman mythology, the three Graces were minor deities personifying joy, wonder and beauty.  These qualities were believed to comprise the core of creativity in Classical history.  Since then, artists have been painting and sculpting these divine figures.

Syracuse native Jarred Vryhof fills the need for healthy, cruelty-free food options, one block of cheese at a time.

Standing at nearly six feet tall with a brawny build and tattoos covering his biceps, Jarred Vryhof says people are always surprised to learn he is an animal-loving, plant-eating vegan. Driven by his experimental appetite, Vryhof started making non-dairy cheese last year when he and two friends were planning to open a vegan restaurant. Although Vryhof’s business partners eventually backed out, he followed his passion for cooking and improving the plant-based food options in Syracuse.

Syracuse woman finds creative ways to reuse old, unwanted items.

As you’re driving down residential streets, you may spot a woman examining a pile of old furniture or junk tossed in front of someone’s house. Chances are this woman could be Susan Hodell. This is one way she hunts for home goods she can spruce up to sell.

Susan, 32, is a Syracuse local who creates, repurposes and sells handmade and vintage decorative items. She is the founder and owner of Driftwood and Glitter, a local small business she started about nine months ago.
