Explore the creative efforts aimed at keeping the local arts community thriving.

If the following profiles on artists, galleries and collectors are any indication, the Syracuse-area art scene has support and is quite alive in many respects.

Several participate in Third Thursday, a free event that involves two dozen Syracuse galleries and museums on the third Thursday of every month. The next event is scheduled for 5-8 p.m. on April 15.

A crowd of about 200 braved the cold and rain and descended upon the Schine Underground Tuesday night for the chance to enjoy the musical stylings of headliner Miike Snow and opening act Theophilus London, the musical guests for 2010’s first Bandersnatch Music Series concert.

Review: Awkward chemistry and not enough from the star himself sinks Andy Samberg's sold-out campus show.Review: Awkward chemistry and not enough from the star himself sinks Andy Samberg's sold-out campus show.

Andy Samberg has put his d--- in a box, jizzed in his pants, and cavorted with a black, transgendered version of Reba McEntire.

What a mensch!

So University Union and Hillel had a stroke of genius to ask the Saturday Night Live comedian to come to Syracuse University Wednesday night.

Most college students revere the man linked to SNL’s often hilarious Digital Shorts that have celebrities such as Justin Timberlake, Natalie Portman and Rihanna in unimaginable situations.

Review: Bo Burnham's humor is lightning-quick, literate, and at times absurdist — more along the lines of Martins, both Steve and Demetri.

Millions of people have watched YouTube celeb Bo Burnham perform his self-accompanied, self-deprecating humorous tunes. The musical comedian had a more intimate audience Friday night when about 500 saw his routine live in Syracuse.

SU senior's unconventional models top Light Work art gallery's Transmedia Photography Annual exhibit.

Jacqui Palumbo went through plenty of ideas, some which she called “really bad,” before she finally settled on the idea she wanted to use for her final Bachelor of Fine Arts show: elder women facing life problems.

“I had this fashion inclination. It’s not necessarily a bad idea, it was just I was using younger models around my age and it was great, but it looked like ads for J Crew with suitcases,” said Palumbo, a photography senior in the College of Visual and Performing Arts. I really wanted to go for more of the narrative and more of the emotional impact.”

Syracuse Opera calls on College of Visual and Performing Arts students to create abstract video backdrops for 'The Flying Dutchman.'

Richard Wagner is considered a god among titans by opera aficionados.

His operas are grand opuses, largely inspired by northern European mythology and legend. Because Wagner operas call for such elaborate sets, staging one is an ambitious endeavor for any company — even one the size of the Metropolitan Opera. Syracuse Opera — the only year-round professional opera company serving upstate New York — has been a successful institution since its first season in 1974, but staging a Wagner opera remains a challenge.

Meet the new faces from the rising DJ subculture on campus.

“In a perfect world, we’d all bump our music as loud as we want.”

That's how Brandon Linn envisions a campus scene that's relatively new, even to him.

The writing program senior is one of a growing number of students who, like many, sits at a computer for long hours working on any given night. Linn’s material, though, doesn’t get presented in front of any class.

Instead you'll find it fueling dimly lit attics, basements and living rooms — anywhere there’s a PA system and some willing partiers.
