NYPIRG banquet raises issues of hunger

The advocacy organization used an interactive workshop to inform students about the pervasiveness of hunger, especially in the Syracuse area.

If asked, most people would not be able to identify where Syracuse University's NYPIRG office is. But students involved with the New York Public Interest Research Group have been championing community awareness on a variety of topics and have brought attention to a major issue in the city's neighborhoods.

Artist Roz Chast tells stories through cartoons

The New Yorker cartoonist lit up Hendricks Chapel Wednesday night with her humor as part of the University Lectures series.

Syracuse University community members filed into Hendricks Chapel Wednesday night to hear the words of Roz Chast, a cartoonist for The New Yorker.

The second guest of the University Lectures series this semester, Chast talked about the “Theories of Everything, and Much, Much More.” The event was in collaboration with the Visual and Performing Arts program.

S.A. policy change stirs student organizations

Student Association implemented an old funding rule that forbids two or more clubs to apply for funding for the same event.

Some student organizations are upset the Student Association’s finance board has decided to enforce an old policy that prevents them from collaborating financially to bring speakers, entertainers and artists to campus for events.

The decision jeopardizes events already in the planning stages.

Chancellor’s inauguration set for April

Kent Syverud will be formally installed as Syracuse University’s 12th Chancellor and President at Hendricks Chapel.

Come April 11, the SU community can officially call him Chancellor Syverud.

Kent Syverud will officially be installed as Syracuse University’s 12th Chancellor and President on Friday, April 11.

Starting at 7 a.m., the new Chancellor will embark on a 1.2-mile run around campus that will end on the Shaw Quad, where a celebration will ensue. Students, faculty and staff are invited to join.

Hillel bringing actor Max Greenfield from the popular FOX sitcom to campus.

Everyone's favorite Jewish ladies man is coming back to his alma mater.

Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated actor Max Greenfield, popularly known for his role as Schmidt in FOX's New Girl, will be speaking on Tuesday, April 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the Goldstein Auditorium for a night of conversation and comedy.

Greenfield's character Schmidt is a Long Island lothario who is a graduate of Syracuse University. He is a brash and cocky scene stealer and a fan favorite. Everyone be sure to bring your douchebag jar and a team for a rousing game of "True American."

Hispanic women in the media share their stories

Three Latina Newhouse alumni discussed their experiences and paths to working in television as part of the NAHJ's Women in the Media panel.

Three Hispanic women in the television and journalism industries discussed their experiences Thursday night in the Joyce Hergenhan Auditorium.

As part of the Women in the Media panel organized by the Syracuse Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Syracuse graduates Bianca Graulau ‘12, Paloma Veloz ’09 and Duria Rodriguez ’09 returned to their alma mater to speak about their different paths.

New Syracuse African American publication will arrive this spring

The Renegade Magazine will have stories affecting SU's African American community, including objectification of women, fashion and lifestyle trends.

With a story in mind, Ibet Inyang approached the editor-in-chief of a Syracuse University magazine who turned her away, saying the topic was too controversial.

Inyang wanted to write about natural hair, a growing trend in the African American community.

“I still don’t really get what she meant by ‘controversial,’ but at that moment I thought that there should be a campus magazine where a story like that can be published,” Inyang said.

Black feminist scholar discusses racial inequalities

Dr. Brittney Cooper, a professor of women's and gender studies and African studies, encouraged students to fight injustices and ask questions in an event for Black History Month.

A scholar of black women’s intellectual history and thought explained the struggles blacks and women are currently facing and ways to fight injustice in a speech for Black History Month Thursday night.

Dr. Brittney Cooper, an assistant professor of women’s and gender studies and African studies at Rutgers University, urged students not to accept the status quo and to fight for the big questions. “If you see a good fight, get in it,” she said.
