Field hockey: Orange completes Ohio sweep with victory over Kent State

Emma Russell records Syracuse's second hat trick in as many days in 6-1 victory.

After outscoring its first three opponents 21-4, No. 5 Syracuse (4-0) completed its four-game sweep through the state of Ohio with a 6-1 victory over Kent State on Tuesday afternoon.

Junior forward Emma Russell scored two goals within the first five minutes en route to a hat trick, the second in as many games by a Syracuse player.

The Golden Flashes (0-2) only held SU scoreless for the next 20 minutes, as senior Lauren Brooks increased the Orange lead to three during the 26th minute. About two minutes later, Russell cashed in a Serra Degnan assist for her third tally.

The Flashes' Shannon Martin broke the shutout in the 52nd minute, but goals by Brooks and explosive SU freshman Annalena Ulbrich buried any comeback attempt.

Orange goalkeeper Rebecca Congel made four saves to win her second-consecutive start between the pipes.

Syracuse finally returns home to J.S. Coyne Stadium this weekend to face Albany on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Ball State on Sunday at 1 p.m.
