Fall a cappella concerts showcase student talent

The a cappella scene at Syracuse consists of six unique groups. As the semester approaches its end, numerous a cappella events take place to showcase what the groups have been learning.

To ensure you don’t miss out, here’s a brief description of each group on campus, its individual event and the combined events for the remainder of the semester.

Groovestand is the premier co-ed a cappella group on campus. Its main event of the semester, “Groovestand’s Spooky Sweet 16,” is this Friday, Oct. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in Schine Underground. The event is named in honor of Groovestand’s 16th year. Fellow Syracuse a cappella groups Main Squeeze and Otto Tunes will also be performing. Tickets can be purchased at the Schine Box Office for $3 or $1 with an SUID.

The Mandarins is the premier female a cappella group at Syracuse, founded in 1996. To celebrate 20 years of Mandarins, the group is releasing a five song extended play called “20.” The women will be celebrating the EP at their fall invitational, “Mandarins Live” on Nov. 5 at 8 p.m. in Hendricks Chapel.

This Saturday, Oct. 29, the all-male a cappella group Orange Appeal has its event “Spooktacular” at 8 p.m. in Schine Underground. Tickets are $3 with an SUID at the box office. The men are currently fundraising for their 20th anniversary album, which is planned to release this summer. The Mandarins will be performing at the event, along with The Enchords from Buffalo. According to Orange Appeal’s President Steven Szachara, “The audience should expect a night of fantastic a cappella talent and performances, and a chance to see what 20 years of being a student organization is all about.”

Unfortunately the other all-male a cappella group, Otto Tunes, already had its main event of the semester, Cockapella; however, fans can still catch them performing at the Remembrance Week Rose Laying Ceremony at 2:03 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29, at the Wall of Remembrance in front of Hall of Languages.

Oy Cappella, fondly called “Oy Caps,” will not have its own invitational this semester, but is hopeful for holding one next spring. In the meantime, the Oy Caps can be found at Hillel events, said president Courtney Abrams.

COMBINED EVENTS

All six groups will be performing for Family Weekend on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 2 p.m. in Goldstein Auditorium. The event is called “An A Cappella Afternoon.” Tickets are free but must be obtained at the box office for entry.

In addition, all the groups perform in AFTERHOURS, which takes place on the last day of classes, Dec. 9, at 9 p.m. in Goldstein Auditorium.
